How It Works
The D3 Content Delivery Network
Distribution Infrastructure
The D3 System has its own private Content Delivery Network (CDN) to service the entertainment industry, which means the infrastructure is already in place to roll out projects quickly and is approved by most information technology departments. D3 uses edge servers called Edge Accelerators to push bandwidth intensive media content as close as possible to the end-user. This eliminates long upload and download times as well as performance issues like buffering and bandwidth congestion. By pushing larger media files (like dailies or final cuts) out to the end user’s location they are accessing media files over their local area network as opposed to the Internet. This removes the need for infrastructure upgrades and keeps network IT folks happy as it minimizes bandwidth congestion.D3 has Edge Accelerators deployed at the following Hollywood Studios and Television Networks:
- Walt Disney Company – Production and DGN Corporate Network (Walt Disney Pictures, ABC Studios, ABC, Touchstone, Disney Channel, Miramax, ESPN).
- CBS Corp. (CBS Network, CBS Productions, Showtime)
- News Corp. (20th Century Fox Television and Films, Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox Television Studios, FX Networks, Fox Cable Networks, Fox Searchlight)
- Viacom (Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, MTV)
- Warner Bros. Studios (Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros Television, Legendary Pictures, Village Roadshow, Warner Horizon)
- Turner Broadcasting – Burbank and Atlanta (CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network)
- Lionsgate
- Summit Entertainment
- NBC-Universal – New York (Universal Pictures, NBC-Universal, NBC, Sci-Fi Channel, Focus Features, USA Networks, Bravo)
- Lifetime Television
- MGM
- Many Independents (Jaffe-Braunstein Films, Tudors UK)
Distribution Tools
D3 is also fully integrated with distribution tools such as SmartJog and Pathfire. The SmartJog integration allows system users to distribute large media files to any destination location on SmartJog’s extensive network. SmartJog is deployed at all studios, over 110 TV distributors, over 300 networked locations and over 1,000 TV buyers worldwide.Pathfire's Digital Media Gateway (DMG) is an advanced digital IP store-and-forward platform, delivering news stories, syndicated programming, advertising spots, and video news releases to 1,400 broadcasters throughout North America. D3 is fully integrated with Pathfire’s Digital Media Gateway enabling seamless pass-through of assets from D3’s online media management system to their distribution footprint. This relationship greatly expands DAX’s distribution capabilities, especially in the area of Electronic Press Kit distribution.
