How It Works

The D3 Web-Based Application

Workflow & Collaboration

D3 has full workflow capabilities that simplify production and post-production collaboration and distribution. D3 enables the delivery of footage, either streaming, editorial or broadcast quality, through the same system. And, since it’s all through one online system, programming execs can view dailies and cuts; labs can distribute OMF and MXF files to editorial suites; and ADR and Protools files can be delivered to sound and music facilities.

Users can also set up pre-defined workflows, such as a graduated release of materials to select audiences. This enables one group of users to review and approve content prior to releasing it to a larger group of users. A great example is a director reviewing a rough-cut prior to releasing it to the network - or a user clicking a button that triggers automated transcoding of a file into a variety of different formats or resolutions, such as Windows Media to QuickTime, or HD to SD for wide area viewing and delivery.

D3 has an unlimited hierarchical release structure and notifications that automatically inform select users of content’s availability. The “Auto Release” function allows content in one category to be automatically released into other categories within the same project. All content metadata and associated files will still be associated with the original content after “Auto Release,” and authorized users can release content to multiple categories (or user groups) with the click of a button.

Notes and annotations can be attached to any content stored in D3 (such as rough cuts, dailies and photography), allowing for tracking approvals and centralized collaboration between personnel. Notes can be made public or kept private, or even made available to select system users. For video, SMPTE time code accurate notes can be made.

Assessing and approving publicity stills, location photos, EPK materials, demo reels, music and interviews has never been easier – evaluators can view, provide comments and approve when it’s convenient for them, from anywhere D3 can be accessed. D3 is also great for the photography kill process.

The system can also send out automated e-mail notifications to alert you when a video element or document has been uploaded or approved in the system, or if a particular user has logged in. Notifications can be generated at the User, Category or Asset level. The system also has an audit trail of all site activities.

Additional D3 Features

  • Scene & Take Manager - The D3 Scene & Take Manager allows users to skip ahead from take to take (bang on slate) without buffering or delay. Fully integrated with Flex Files, ALEs and EDLs, The D3 Scene & Take Manager operates similar to a DVD by allowing non-linear skipping through chapter points. D3 also allows users to make selections in the system and assemble them into a playlist. Users can name playlists, organize clips in a sequential order, re-shuffle takes, and add notes and comments associated to SMPTE time code. Viewing content in the Scene & Take Manager enables users to freeze each frame; advance forward/backward frame by frame; scrub frame by frame; zoom full screen or playout to a monitor with the click of a mouse.
  • Batch Upload with Bandwidth Acceleration - D3 has functions like Batch Upload that let you upload bandwidth intensive media files and multiple assets concurrently. Built as a separate client applet, it lets you continue working, while being able to monitor the status of asset upload, network performance and throughput. The Batch Upload feature also has Bandwidth Acceleration tools maximizing available bandwidth and increasing transfer rates – GB sized files can be transferred cross-continentally in minutes. Shared Files - Assets can also be copied/aliased into categories within the same project or even another project without increasing storage allocation.
  • Auto-Transcoding - A built-in image transcoding engine lets users choose between video or images, file format and size to best suit their needs prior to download.
  • Version Control – all files uploaded to the system are time stamped and contain associated metadata clearly identifying which is the latest version (and who made any changes). Files can also be linked back to originals to ensure consistency.
  • Check In/Out – the system clearly identifies when files are currently “checked out” or in use.
  • File Compatibility - D3 is completely file format agnostic, meaning it accepts any kind of document, graphic, audio and video files – including leading script, editing, budgeting and accounting, basic office and audio-video media player formats.
All of D3’s features work in both standard and high-definition (depending on available bandwidth), and support such formats as Windows Media, QuickTime, H.264 and MPEG 2/4 formats.

Administrative Controls

With D3, you are always in complete control over who can access what content and when. D3 gives you the ability to create and define user access privileges at both the micro- and macro-level – you can set up Users with access as finite as just one file or as broad as multiple projects. D3 has pre-defined User Profiles (editor, marketing exec, etc.) and Users Groups (production, finance, etc.) making adding and changing profiles easy and fast.

A Content Expiration feature lets you set windows of time or numbers of downloads/views in which individual users can access specific elements - you can make a file available for 24 hours, 10 days, indefinitely or for five views.

A Central Audit and Logging System tracks all site activities and provides you with a detailed report easily exportable into a spreadsheet. The system has full activity search and sort capabilities, searchable by user, action or date.

Powerful search and sorting tools help users find what they need quickly and effectively.
